About THE Hartwood Restaurant
& Whispers pub
The building now known as The Hartwood Restaurant was once owned by the Harmar Coal Mine. In 1988 Donald and Molly Montgomery purchased the building and moved their Bookstore from The Fox Chapel Plaza. This bookstore and it's cafe became the foundation for the restaurant.
Adjacent to the Hartwood Restaurant's main dining room is Whispers Pub. Whispers Pub is the perfect place to enjoy a serving of angers and Mashers, Sheperd's Pie, Prime Rib, or just a Burger and a beer. On weekends, Whispers Pub's selection of beers on tap and great atmosphere draws locals to their favorite watering hole. Our extended outdoor patio seating is also a very popular destination.
Whispers Pub was named for the signature window that adorns it. This stained glass was designed and executed by master artisans in the Rudy Brother's Studio in 1897. The skillful painting on the window was done by Charles Connick when he apprenticed with Horace Rudy. The window was created for a house in Squirrel Hill that was built by a prominent Pittsburgh family who occupied the home for 47 years. The unusual setting for the window is a fancy black die Middle Eastern dress party. These parties were the rage of society in this time period when Moorish design was a fashionable part of the Victorian scene. The focal point of this window is the two beautiful women. One is whispering party gossip into the others ear, adding intrigue to the scene. It was a rare occurrence to commission a featured window of this caliber for a private home.
